Oral Hygiene Hacks: Part 1

Oral Hygiene Hacks: Part 1

October is National Dental Hygiene Month, and to celebrate we're sharing our favorite tips for natural oral health. If you're trying to avoid fluoride and other chemicals found in conventional oral care products, read on! This post will cover natural and environmentally-friendly alternatives to brushing and flossing.

Looking for a toothpaste that's free of fluoride but still cleans your teeth? Many dentists recommend xylitol to help prevent bacteria that cause tooth decay. We love Spry® Peppermint Xylitol Toothpaste or NOW® Xyliwhite™ Platinum Mint Toothpaste with Baking Soda (available in kid-friendly flavors too!).  For a naturally brighter smile, charcoal toothpaste can help you brush your way to pearly whites by removing stains. If simple is more your style, Redmond Clay Earthpaste® contains only 5 all-natural ingredients for a clean product and smile!

Take care of your teeth and the environment, too! It’s a good idea to replace your toothbrush every 1-6 months. But if you’re concerned about contributing to landfills, switch to an eco-friendly brush. Radius® toothbrushes are made with recyclable material, including wood, paper, and even money! Check out their replacement brush heads as well for an even greener option.

Many conventional dental floss products are coated with less-than-natural ingredients.  Fortunately, Desert Essence® has you covered with all-natural tea tree floss and dental tape (tea tree provides natural bacteria-fighting benefits!). If you're short on time, floss while you brush with one of these flossing toothbrushes!

Ever wondered why many oral care products have a "warning: do not swallow" label on it? Often they contain strong chemicals that kill germs but are harmful if ingested. Fortunately, there are plenty of natural and effective alternatives! Look for mouthwash made with xylitol, neem or tea tree for bacteria-fighting protection and naturally fresher breath. For a convenient 3-in-1 option, we love Brushing Rinse™. It's made with organic aloe vera and natural essential oils (yes, you can rinse, gargle and brush with it!).

Stay tuned for part two of our dental hygiene series to learn about oil pulling and natural teeth whitening!
