Resolution season is upon us! Let’s be honest, if you’re not making resolutions, you probably have a friend who is jumping on the bandwagon of some health trend. Before you dive head first into something, it’s good to do some research into what you’re doing. Today, we’ll discuss a very misunderstood topic: detox! What most people don’t understand about detox is, it's a process that happens multiple times a day in the body as a result of eating, drinking or coming in contact with toxins. It doesn’t come in a box, or happen because you’re drinking only juices. This is not to say that there aren’t supportive products out there, but that’s what they are: support. The major detoxification organs are the liver, kidneys, lungs, blood and lymphatic system, as well as the colon and the skin. We need to support our natural detoxification processes now more than ever, because we are so overexposed to toxins. Not only do we need to worry about the quality of our whole foods, but many people are exposed to tons of chemicals and toxins via processed, food-like products. But it doesn’t stop there. We’re also exposed to toxins in our air, water, and bath and body products on a daily basis -- sometimes multiple times within minutes!

What can you do?

Detoxification support should also be about avoiding excess toxin exposure, as well as supporting our body’s natural waste removal systems. The less toxins you come in contact with, the less you’ll need to step up your game and support your detoxification. Thankfully, there are some simple things you can start implementing now that will add up over time.

Drink More Water!

Most people aren’t even getting their daily water intake, which is about half your body weight in ounces. Water is important for every one of the detoxification organs, and dehydration concentrates toxins in the body! You can enhance your water by adding fruit, mint, ginger or cucumber to give flavor but also get some added nutrients into your water.

Make Cleaner Food Choices

Limiting the amount of processed foods one consumes isn’t enough. We also need to be more aware of the chemicals our whole foods are coming in contact with. Switching to organic, grass fed, and pasture raised foods will help limit exposure to harsh pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides that can be endocrine disruptors in the body. It may help to track what you eat and when you eat it as well. I really like the idea of a diet diary! The good news is, there are many apps in this digital age that support this. Research shows that there is more success in dietary changes when people track what they do. This is also a good time to mention that most of us are not getting enough veggies in our diet. By focusing on whole foods and ramping up vegetable intake (75% of your plate should be veggies) we are naturally supporting and enhancing detoxification processes!

Supportive Detox Herbs

Supportive detox herbs can offer deeper support to the detoxifying organs in your body. Traditional detox herbs include milk thistle, dandelion, uva ursi, and even NAC, which is an amino acid. Enhancing detoxification also means supporting gut health and proper waste elimination through things like probiotics, as well as fiber, which can help bind toxins and help with bulking stool for better waste removal from the body. Detox kits are not a magic fix, but the herbs in them can support those naturally-occurring processes for more advanced support.
To learn more about how these items can work for you, consider stopping by one of my Fruitful Yield lecture events, or our upcoming Facebook Live where I’ll be discussing these things in more depth!
