Better-for-Your-Hair Care

Today we join Fruitful Yield marketing team member and cosmetologist Michelle Wong for a crash course in hair styling. She's talking about using the right products and techniques for your desired hair type & style, without as many harsh chemicals found in conventional hair products. At FY, we aim to have hair care products that are clean and free from sodium laurel sulfates, parabens, and artificial colors and fragrances.

First of all, for all hair types, we recommend using a heat protectant when blow drying, curling, or flat-ironing, such as the Andalou Naturals Andalou Argan Styling Crème or the Desert Essence Coconut Hair Defrizzer & Heat Protector. Both are moisturizing, de-frizzing, and protecting.

Straight Hair with Mineral Fusion

For straight styles, start with a smoothing shampoo & conditioner. We love the Mineral Fusion Smoothing line! It’s all the smoothing power without the heaviness that some products leave. For styling, protect the mid-ends of your hair with a thermal protecting spray or crème, and blow drying directing the nozzle of your dryer downwards. This will help the hair to lay flat.

If you’re trying for a straight hair, but you’re naturally curly, sandwich small sections of your hair between a paddle brush and your blow dryer’s air concentrator while moving down the section. Finish straightening with a flat iron if needed.

If you have naturally straight hair and prefer to air dry, do so and add just 1-2 drops of pure argan oil to your palms, warm by rubbing between your hands, and run through the mids-ends of your hair. This will help you nix frizz without heat styling!

Voluminous Hair with Giovanni

For a voluminous style, start with Giovanni's 2chic Ultra-Volume Shampoo and Conditioner. Use a volumizing hair foam (such as Giovanni's 2chic Ultra-Volume Foam Styling Mousse) before blow drying to take your 'do to new heights! Just make sure that when you blow dry, you do so with a round brush, pulling each section of hair upwards with the brush as your dry.

For an extra volume-kick, you can occasionally tease your roots with a teasing brush, or curl your hair with a curling iron and brush out the curls for a soft, voluminous wave. When you're done, hold down your style with their L.A. Hold Hair Spritz, for a hair hold that won't weigh you down.

Curly Hair with Andalou

After you shampoo and condition with Exotic Marula Oil Silky Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner, it's likely time to jump into moisture, moisture, moisture. Curly girls tend to have drier hair because it takes a longer time for the oil from your scalp to travel around the coil of your hair strands (as opposed to straight hair). Prep your hair for blow drying with a moisturizing heat protectant and a touch of Exotic Marula Oil Silky Smooth Taming Creme. Style by twisting your hair into curls before using a diffuser to blow nearly dry. Once dry, you may pick out a few curls you'd like to define more with your curling iron. Simply twist the small section of hair around the curling iron away from your face, and hold for 5 seconds depending on how thick your hair is. If you're still feeling frizzy, finish with a couple drops of their 1000 Roses® Moroccan Beauty Oil.

If your hair is still craving moisture, we love the Exotic Marula Oil Silky Smooth Hair Mask for a weekly quenching!

(If you have thin curly hair, feel free to use the products listed in the voluminous  section, but using the curly hair blow drying technique.)

Super Curly Hair with Alaffia

For hair with tight wave patterns, and the tendency to be dry and breakage-prone, we love Alaffia’s Repair & Restore collection! Start with their Conditioning Shampoo & Creme Conditioner. For dry, super curly hair, shampoo only once or twice a week. If you must wash your hair, try using only conditioner instead of shampoo for a gentler cleanse. If you’re on the path to growing out your hair, try using Alaffia's Daily Moisturizing Hair Creme and wearing your hair in protective styles, like braids using a non-snag hair band. Never comb or brush your hair when wet, unless you’ve thoroughly moisturized, and use a wide tooth comb. These practices ensure that your growing hair doesn’t snag and suffer breakage.

Whether you're growing your hair out or rocking it short, keep moisturizing with product, using a heat protectant when blow drying (with a diffuser of course) and finishing off with Repair & Restore Finishing Oil Mist. The mist is great for moisture and shine: a healthy hair glow! Alaffia also has a great moisturizing hair mask to replenish even the driest strands!

If you plan on styling your damp hair with foam rods, make sure to try Repair & Restore Curl Defining Cream Gel from root to tip to define curls and hold your style all day long!

Remember...

These are just the basics of styling hair, and rules are meant to be broken! If your hair type is a combination of those mentioned here, feel free to mix and match products to suit your style. If you have any questions, please ask in the comment section below, and I'll be sure to answer it.
